The top 5 selfies of 2013

2103 was the year of the selfie. The word itself basked in the limelight of being named Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year.

“It’s not be a new word,” Oxford Dictionaries stated on its blog. ”But our Word of the Year need not be a new word. However, it does need to demonstrate some kind of prominence over the preceding year or so and selfie certainly fits the bill. It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet.”

Right you are, Oxford Dictionaries! Celebrities, of course, did their part to litter the Internet with beautiful, sexual, controversial selfies. Here is the year of the selfie in review.

1. Kim Kardashian

Who could forget this one? Kim Kardashian posted this #NoFilter pic on Instagram and Twitter and an eager Kanye West responded, “HEADING HOME NOW.”

Oh, those two.

2. Beyonce

We wonder if as a little girl, tiny tot Beyonce had any idea that she would one day cause global breaking news by simply showing the world a picture of her new haircut.

3. Barack Obama

Nelson Mandela’s memorial proved to be a selfie-opp for President Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt. Was it the appropriate time or place? The world certainly had plenty to say about it.

4. @mrpimpgoodgame: Benny Winfield Jr.

Many of us are probably guilty of posting a few too many selfies, but Benny Winfield Jr. made selfie history by posting nearly identical selfies of himself day after day. His Instragram account gained overnight notoriety, landing him in the selfie hall of fame.

5. Pope Francis

It was quite the year for the world’s newest pope. Besides making groundbreaking comments on refusing to judge homosexuals, Pope Francis was also responsible for what’s considered to be the first papal selfie, taken with some teens at St. Peter’s Basilica.
