The Word: Nick Cannon defends Mariah Carey

Judge Mariah Carey poses at the party for the finalists of the television show “American Idol” judge Mariah Carey

In an appearance on the “KTLA Morning News,” Nick Cannon defended his wife, Mariah Carey, and her on-going feud with co-judge Nicki Minaj on “American Idol.” “My wife [had] foreseen all this. She tried to tell the network, ‘I don’t think this is going to work. I’m afraid … I don’t need this.’ ” Cannon said Carey thought that pairing her and Minaj was “taking it in the wrong direction, because this is going to turn into one of those reality shows. She’s like, ‘I didn’t sign up to be on “Love and Hip Hop.”‘”

But that doesn’t mean Carey is letting the fighting bother her. Per Cannon: “She comes home and just doesn’t have time for it. She’s too busy trying to be the world’s biggest superstar-mom.”

According to reports, this will probably be Carey’s first and last season on the show. “American Idol” producerNigel Lythgoe is reportedly eyeing Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Pink and Sean “Diddy” Combs to take over as judges next year.

“You can’t get any bigger than Justin Bieber. The executives are calling it their dream team because who wouldn’t tune in to see Justin and Selena, Pink and Diddy?,” a Fox insider tells Radaronline. “Pink has been approached in the past and turned it down as well as Diddy, who wanted too much money. It will cost a fortune to get them, but the show has gotten so stale that Fox is desperate for a revamp – they’re willing to pay to put Idol back on top.”
