‘The Awake’
The opening of “The Awake” is this Wednesday, Aug. 28. It’s about a modern America and how we live in a world we no longer understand, written by Ken Urban and directed by Adam Fitzgerald. The cast includes Maulik Pancholy (“Weeds,” “30 Rock”). Tickets are on sale at www.59e59.org.
Closing
‘Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike’
It’s your final chance to catch “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” on Broadway before it closes Sunday, Aug. 25. It’s about two siblings who have never left their childhood home who receive a surprise visit from their movie-star sister and her 20-something boy toy, who throw their home into wacky upheaval. This comedy was written by Tony Award winner Christopher Durang and directed by Nicolas Martin. It presently stars David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”), Kristine Nielsen and Julie White. ‘The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin’
Closing this Sunday, Aug. 25, David Morse (“Treme” and “John Adams”) plays a father trying to reconnect with his family after serving time in prison for white-collar crime. It was written by Steven Levenson and directed by Scott Ellis. The cast also includes Christopher Denham (“Argo”), Sarah Goldberg and Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”). ‘The Designated Mourner’
The final performance of Wallace Shawn’s unnerving and unforgettable play is Sunday, Aug.25. This show was revived on the Public Theater’s stage this season after 13 years of playing at an abandoned men’s club near Wall Street. Three interlaced monologues (performed by the 2000 cast of Shawn, Deborah Eisenberg and Larry Pine) tell of an unnamed country’s purge of liberal intellectuals.
