Theo Epstein: Deal almost done with Cubs

Theo Epstein might officially be a Chicago Cub by tomorrow.

ESPN.com is reporting that the Red Sox and Cubs are “on the 5-yard-line” of completing a deal that would allow Epstein to take over baseball operations in Chicago.

The teams have apparently reached a compromise that will let the Cubs acquire Epstein’s services while keeping all their major leaguers and top prospects. The Sox were also reportedly unable to pawn John Lackey’s contract off on Chicago.

Major League Baseball would allow a press conference to announce Epstein’s arrival in Chicago tomorrow, despite the World Series being underway.

Reports last night that Padres GM Jed Hoyer will almost immediately assume the same role with the Cubs may have been inaccurate, ESPN.com reported.
