Theo Epstein: Red Sox GM leaving for the Cubs?

First, Terry Francona was sent packing.

Now, Theo Epstein might join him on the next bus out of Boston.

The Red Sox GM is on the brink of leaving for a similar job with the Chicago Cubs, according to a Herald report tonight.

Citing two unnamed big league sources, Steve Buckley reported that Epstein “is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston.”

An announcement is expected within two days.

The Sox are reportedly still negotiating to keep Epstein in the fold, and will expect compensation if he does, in fact, leave for Chicago.

The boy wonder GM helped put together the Sox team that snapped an 86-year title drought in 2004. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908.
