Free things to do in Boston

It’s a tough time of the year. We’re only a few weeks into winter, and there’s been days in the single digits. It’s not even the temperature, it’s the windchill freezes you down to your soul. Thankfully, we live in a big city with plenty of fun, fresh and free things to do this February, besides hibernating! Here is our guide to the best free things to do in Boston this month.

Franklin Park Winter Festival

The first activity on our list of free things to do in Boston is pretty cool. (No pun intended.) The Franklin Park Coalition is hosting a festival for all types of winter fun. Buddle up and take a trek outdoors, make some (indoor) art projects and enjoy some warm hot chocolate.

Feb. 8, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Franklin Park Golf Clubhouse, 1 Circuit Drive, Boston, franklinparkcoalition.org

MIT Swing Dance Lessons

Did you guys see The Great Gatsby and find yourselves a little jealous? Well now you can enjoy a little bit of the 20’s lifestyle with MIT’s swing dance lessons. Learn how to jitterbug, jive and boogie-woogie every Wednesday. All dance lessons are free. There’s even a dance afterwards from 9 p.m.-11 p.m. so you can show off your new moves.

Every Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.-9 p.m., Walker Memorial, 142 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, mit.edu/swing

ICA Free Thursday Nights

Life hack: you don’t have to pay to enjoy art at the ICA ever again. As long as you go on Thursday nights, but you get four chances this month. As a bonus, until Feb. 21 the ICA hosts the William Forsythe: Choreographic Objects exhibit. This art installation is the “first comprehensive American exhibition of performative objects, video installations and interactive sculptures by choreographic William Forsythe.” But don’t trust us, go check it out this Thursday for free.

Every Thursday, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Institute of Contemporary Art, 25 Harbor Shore Dr., Boston, icaboston.org

Frost Fit Workouts on the Esplanade

We can get a little lazy in the winter. Hey, when it’s single digits outside, no one is hankering to get outside and run a few miles. But the Frost Fit Winter Series is coming to the Esplanade every Saturday this February. With some encouragement and proper clothes, Frost Fit Workouts are a great way to start the year with healthy habits. Anyone who attends these workouts will receive a Frost Fit series headband, bagels, coffee and hot chocolate.

Every Saturday, 10 a.m.-11 a.m., Hatch Memorial Shell, 47 David G Mugar Way, Boston, esplanade.org

Chinese New Year parade

Chinese New Year is an important holiday to all who celebrate it. The Spring Festival includes delicious foods, decorations and dance performances. Come to Chinatown this year to celebrate The Year of the Pig that will feature cultural art demonstrations, book reading, and crafting.
