High Times hosts first New England Cannabis Cup

Cannabis Cup

Mark your calendars, cannabis fans: the High Times Cannabis Cup is coming to the east cost for the first time this weekend.

The Cup, which doubles as a pot-growing competition and a general celebration of the plant, has been exclusively held on the west coast (never further east than Denver), but is making the leap to New England in the wake of Massachusetts and Maine legalizing. Interestingly, the event is not in either of those states, but in Rhode Island. Fear not: Rhode Island has relaxed its medical marijuana rules since 2006.

High Times is collaborating with The Farmacist – a website devoted to covering Rhode Island’s medical marijuana program, as well as “ending the stigma of cannabis users” – on the event, which will be held at the Tetra Hydra Club in Wakefield, Rhode Island. There will be plenty of opportunities to sample the Cup competitors’ products throughout the weekend. Stick around on Sunday for the awards show at – you guessed it – 4:20 p.m.

Saturday’s portion of the festival, which runs from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., will include a performance by rapper Redman. Fans of ’90s hip-hop will want to get a good spot to see the former Def Jam member and Method Man collaborator.

This weekend’s Cup is somewhat of a humble beginning to High Times’ New England presence, but if it sees success, northeast residents could look forward to seeing many new and creative events in the future. Their more established So-Cal festival in November features performances by Akon and Wyclef Jean, a weed harvest farmer’s market, a live grow room, a cannabis career fair, a cannabis cooking competition, a topical massage spa and plenty of food vendors.
