It’s 11 p.m. and you’re looking to keep the night going — how does dessert and cocktails at a speakeasy bar sound?
Hidden beneath Flatiron’s Patisserie Chanson, known for its edible works of art, Chanson’s Dessert Bar wows crowds nightly with its six-course theatrical dessert tastings. Now, they’re extending the bar’s hours and inviting everyone after the night’s last seating to enjoy all-new pairings of cocktails and petite gâteaux.
The drinks appropriately take their inspiration from Prohibition, since the space that became Dessert Bar was discovered during construction of the bakery above. Playing cards have been etched into the walls to echo its illicit past, but these cocktails aren’t meant to be hidden.
The 15 new cocktails include five Signature Dessert Cocktails like The Illusionist (gin, sake, yerba mate, cardamom, buttery pea flower, sloe drupe) served with a miso pudding, cashew cookie and pink grapefruit tart, and The 19th (bourbon, maple, walnut, candy cap mushroom) paired with a chocolate and banana cannoli ($26).
They come in gloriously fancy porcelain teapots, perched like they were blooming from a Bonsai trees, and smoldering beneath glass domes. Didn’t get the right Insta earlier in the night? This is your delicious second chance.
You’ll still need a reservation for one of their two nightly seatings to enjoy the full production of chef Rory MacDonald’s six-course tasting menu paired with wines and cocktails. Think cheeses served as edible “flowers” in a vase, a pear poached in moscato using a syphon brewer, the most stunning rice pudding you’ve ever tasted — and if you’re lucky a bonus course of whiskey gummy bears.
Chanson’s Dessert Bar is located at 20 W. 23rd St., open Wed-Sat, with tasting menu seatings at 6 and 9 p.m. Those can be reserved through Resy; no reservations are needed for the bar, open after 11 p.m. until 2 a.m.
