For nearly 50 years, ABC Training Center has been a fixture in the Bronx, helping residents to start their careers. This week they will celebrate the opening of their new headquarters, at 50 East Fordham Road (entrance on Walton Avenue ). Since 1972, ABC has partnered with several hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other medical facilities to find job placement for over 50,000 of its graduates in the healthcare industry.

What sets this training facility apart from others is the sheer scope and variety of the programs it covers, coupled with the success rate for its graduates. Students can enroll in classes to earn their certification for Home Health Aide, EKG & Phlebotomy Tech, Certified Nurse Aide, Pharmacy Tech, Medical Assistant, and Medical Billing & Coding, among others. Licensed by the New York State Department of Education and given an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau, ABC Training Center has provided residents of the Bronx and its surrounding neighborhoods in the New York City area with reliable, low-cost career training to help its students break into the country’s fastest growing industry.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is projected to increase its workforce by 18 percent by 2026. Thanks to its respected reputation for the quality of its graduates, ABC is helping New Yorkers jump ahead of the pack and find work quickly in a competitive field. David Herwitz, the Director of ABC Trainer Center, grew up only a few blocks away from the school and takes pride in what ABC has been able to accomplish in the community. But, as he sees it, the need for so many healthcare professionals is bittersweet.
“The bad news is, unfortunately, that people will always get old and people will continue to become ill. . That’s just a fact of life,” Herwitz explained. “The good news is that the competition between employers to fill these positions is fierce. And, these jobs are a good alternative to college for people who don’t want to go, can’t afford it, or just don’t want to go right away. These jobs will always be there waiting in any economy. For example: Home Health Aide — which is one of the jobs that we train for here — is going to be the most available and essential job in the coming decade, above all other professions.”
Herwitz described the competition among home health agencies for aides as “particularly intense.”
“We have to schedule them one after another to come into our classrooms to make their pitches. Our students are receiving job offers before they even graduate! Another position that has a great need for workers is Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). We’ve actually rented office space on our premises to the biggest hiring agency in the city, because they want all of our CNA grads, and want them right away! These are examples of jobs that are increasing in number even at a time when the economy is offloading many others,” he said.
ABC is making good on this promise, by admitting students from all demographics and backgrounds into their programs. For example: if you have not earned your high school diploma you will be able to take an entrance exam in order to be eligible for the majority of these programs and the chance at gaining entry into this competitive workforce.
