A third-grader brought a gun to his school and showed it to several classmates, according to Lowell Police.

School officials notified the department on Oct. 25 that a third-grade boy had brought the firearm to class in his backpack after one of the students he showed the gun to told their parents.

The gun was at the child’s home, authorities learned when they met with the boy and his parents at Greenhalge Elementary School, but the child thought that it was an airsoft gun,Lowell Police said on Facebook.

The gun, a.25 caliber pistol,was not loaded when it was handed over to police.

According to police, the firearm was in a box of items that belonged to a relative who was temporarily displaced by a fire.

The boy’s father is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and improper storage of a firearm.

Lowell Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and the Lowell School Department continue to investigate the incident.
