This “Get Out” star has some words for Samuel L. Jackson

Have you guys seen “Get Out?” It’s made $100 million at the box office, so I’m guessing yes. I saw it, and I liked it. Apparently, Samuel L. Jackson liked it, too. Except for one thing.

According to Vulture, the film prompted Jackson to stumble into the Hot 97 radio station and wonder aloud what “Get Out” would have been like “with an American brother who really feels that.”

The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, a Black British actor with Ugandan parents who probably has never experienced racism or racial tension or a series of racially charged microaggressions or anything.

Now, Kaluuya, 27, is talking to GQ and airing his own frustrations. “Big up to Samuel L. Jackson… here’s the thing about that critique though… I’ve had to wrestle with people going, ‘You’re too black.’ Then I come to America and they say, ‘You’re not black enough.’” He continued, “I resent that I have to prove that I’m black.”

On the one hand, I get that Jackson was trying to say something about race and representation in Hollywood. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s fair to minimize other people’s experiences. On a third hand — wait, why do I have three damn hands? — Hollywood has a race problem as is. So where does that leave us, really?
