Despite great weather thousands of Vision Vancouver supporters mobbed the Croatian Cultural Centre on Father’s Day to vote at the party’s mayoral nomination.
At its peak the line stretched nearly a kilometre to vote for Vision candidates NDP MLA Gregor Robertson, Coun. Raymond Louie and park commissioner Al De Genova. Organizers said nearly 4,500 people crowded into the centre to vote before noon, with another 1,500 to 2,000 expected before the end of the day.
By comparison, just slightly more than 2,000 members of the Non-Partisan Association turned out in a similar contest last weekend.
Members of the Indo-Canadian community, many sporting Raymond Louie stickers, were dropped off from buses in the centre’s parking lot. They mingled with the many placard-waving Robertson and T-shirt-wearing De Genova supporters.
Together the three candidates have wrangled 11,000 new members in the past few months.
