President Trump was received by shouting crowds as thousands gathered to protest his appearance when he arrived in New York Monday night. Trump has been under fire after failing to explicitly condemn white supremacists for violence in Charlottesville until just yesterday.

Last night’s rallies next to Trump Tower were not only attended by angered locals but by public officials who spoke out against Trump’s response to the brutality seen at a white nationalist gathering in Virginia on Saturday during a march called ‘Unite the Right.’

State Assembly Member Carmen de la Rosa of Manhattan called on the public to take action. “When we stand up, the nation looks to us,” she said. “If we don’t stand up, history will look at us in disgust.”

Police told CBS2 that three arrests had been made at the Trump Tower protests for disorderly conduct. Among the crowds were also supporters of the President who defended his actions.

Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo repeatedly called on the President to denounce white supremacists over the weekend, both local officials tweeting that that the events in Charlottesville were domestic terrorism.

In a statement yesterday, Trump remarked, “Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”
