Three suspects sought after diamond robbery

Police are on the hunt for three men who robbed a man of a “large quantity” of diamonds yesterday morning in the city’s southeast, according to police.

Police say the victim told investigators he was sitting in his rental car, which had broken down in the 400 block of 39th Ave. SE when three men smashed the window and stole a large quantity of diamonds.

“Our information is that he was a diamond salesman and had the diamonds on him when he was robbed. Maybe he was being followed or maybe they had information, we’re looking into all possible scenarios,” Duty Insp. Keith Cain said.

The men reportedly fled in two minivans, one of which may have been recovered in the city’s northeast a short time later where police canine units, tactical team and HAWCS helicopter swarmed.

“Right now all we know it was a large quantity of diamonds but we don’t know how big or how much they are worth yet,” Cain added.

The men are described as brown skinned and may have been driving grey minivans, possibly with Ontario plates.
