Three-town drunken police chase ends with smashed cruiser

A woman led police from several departments on a multicity chase late Tuesday night that ended with a rammed police cruiser in Hingham.

Authorities said a cellphone caller alerted them that a woman, later identified as Cherylann Kelley of Weymouth, was acting bizarrely in the Mobile Mart Gas Station parking lot on King Street in Cohasset at 9:30 p.m., WCVB reported. The caller told police she approached his vehicle, opened the door and threw a bottle at him.

As police officers arrived at the gas station, Kelley allegedly fled from the parking lot at a high speed in a 2008 Hyundai sedan, WCVB added.

In an attempt to evade police, Kelley drove without stopping through several nearby towns, with Hingham police joining the chase as it entered Hingham and Quincy police doing the same once the chase passed over the Fore River Bridge, CBS reported in a related article.

At the corner of Washington Street and McGrath Highway in Quincy, Kelley reportedly rammed a Hingham police cruiser, giving officers an opportunity to pull her from her car and take her into custody, CBS added.

Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley was quoted by WCVB, “This pursuit was conducted in a safe, professional manner, and exactly inline with our policies. … The officers did a great job, and everyone is safe.”

Kelley was charged with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, and assault and battery with both a bottle and a motor vehicle, according to CBS, which also stated that she is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
