The NBA schedule makers could not have done a better job starting the 2017-18 season with high-drama matchups. The New York Knicks get their season going on Thursday night as they pay a visit to an old friend, Carmelo Anthony, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
This season-opening meeting comes weeks after the Knicks traded the 10-time All-Star to Oklahoma City for Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second-round draft pick.
Anthony’s trade drama throughout the summer was just one aspect of the Knicks’ dizzying offseason. With Phil Jackson and a new front office in place, Anthony finally relented in the final weeks of the offseason and expanded his list of accepted teams on his no-trade clause from just the Houston Rockets.
That just shows how badly he wanted to get out of town.
Now the Knicks are Kristaps Porzingis’ team and in a weak Eastern Conference, the playoffs aren’t completely out of the question if the team can stay healthy. In the NBA season’s first two nights, we’ve already seen Gordon Hayward of the Boston Celtics and Jeremy Lin of the Brooklyn Nets go down with season-ending injuries.
But a path to the playoffs begins with just one single step and that comes on Thursday night. Here is how you can catch all the action:
