An Education
Rating: **

The title of Lone Scherfig’s ’60s-set drama An Education is a double-entendre.

It refers to the Oxford aspirations of 16-year-old English private school girl Jenny (Carey Mulligan), and also the more practical lessons she learns during her whirlwind romance with a much older man (Peter Sarsgaard).

Complications ensue. But there’s never any real doubt as to where the film is headed, as Nick Hornby’s atypically flat script telegraphs Jenny’s ethical dilemma well in advance.
