Times Square Elmo gets year in jail for trying to extort Girl Scouts

Times Square Elmo

The Times Square Elmo who tried to extort the Girl Scouts for $2 million has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Dan Sandler, 50, threatened to spread lies about sexual abuse within the organization, saying he would make claims that the organization set up meetings between adult men and underage girls.

Sandler, who was a temporary employee with the Girl Scouts, also sent harassing emails and semi-nude photos of himself to his former supervisor.

On Wednesday, he accepted his sentence but tried to justify his actions.

“I accept the fact I committed a crime, but I’m not in any way sorry to the Girl Scouts organization,” he said, according to The New York Post.

He claimed that the “very corrupt” organization was working with pharmaceutical companies to promote “off-label marketing.”

“This is not the case of someone in the back room of the office trying to embezzle money,” he said. “This is more of a protest, like laying down in an intersection.”

Sandler made headlines last year when he went on an anti-Semitic rant while dressed up as the popular Sesame Street character in Times Square.

He was also locked up after he was arrested in San Francisco for grabbing a child while panhandling in his Elmo costume.
