Tina Fey fights alt-right with #sheetcaking on Weekend Update

You know the country is deeply divided when we can’t even agree that Nazis are evil. But what can one person do when even the president insists there are “many sides” to the white power rally that turned deadly last weekend at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville?

Tina Fey has one answer: #sheetcaking.

The SNL alum and 1992 UVA graduate appeared on Weekend Update: Summer Edition, a half-hour spinoff of Saturday Night Live airing Thursdays on NBC through August.

While making people laugh in spite of tragic events has been the SNL team’s unenviable job lately, Fey made it as easy as eating cake.

Wearing a UVA sweatshirt, Fey appeared on the Aug. 17 episode to bottom line it for anyone who may be confused: “I’m feeling sick because I’ve seen ‘Raiders of the Lost Arc,’ and I wasn’t confused by it,” she tells co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che. “Nazis are always bad.”

With more alt-right rallies planned for this weekend, she knows a lot of people are feeling anxious. And while she trusts that the drag queens of New York can handle any neo Nazis who may rally in Washington Square Park, she advised the rest of us to try another form of protest: order a cake with the American flag on it from your local bakery (preferably with African-American, Jewish, or other marginalized owners) “and just eat it.”

“Sheetcaking is a grassroots movement,” she explains. “Most of the women I know have been doing it once a week since the election.”

For the next 3 minutes and 40 seconds, Fey proceeds to eat an impressive amount of the cake while getting in digs on every facet of American politics this issue touches on. Like the peaceful environmental protests by Native Americans shut down with brutal tactics by the government “while we let you chinless turds march through the streets with semiautomatic weapons.”

“And also, who drove the car into the crowd, Hillary’s emails?”

Of course, there are hilarious name-checks of President Trump, House Speaker Paul Ryan and conservative commentator Ann Coulter, and just a tiny one at the American public, too.

“Treat these rallies this weekend like the opening of a thoughtful movie with two female leads: Don’t show up,” she says. “Let these morons scream into the empty air.”
