Toast Christmas Day at Grand Central’s 1920s bar Campbell Apartment

There are lots of reasons to drink onChristmas Day — when’s the last time Santa brought you what you asked for, anyway? This year, you just have a slightly classier option than the dive bar down the block.

The1920’s-styleCampbell Apartment bar in Grand Central is opening on Christmas Day for the first time since it opened in 1999. Previously, the room was the private office of railroad magnate John W. Campbell from 1923 into the ’40s, with a massive exterior window, a stone fireplace and a second-floor balcony. (All that old school splendor comes with a dress code, so don’t roll in wearing your Christmas morning jammies.)

The bar isn’t a speakeasy, but it’s off the less-traveled entrance on Vanderbilt Avenue; a plaque marks the entryway stairs. And while an eggnog martini will certainly go a long way to get you either into or over the holidays, you may want to avoid the bar if you’ve been dodging the ghosts of Christmas — it’s said to be haunted.

On Christmas Day, the bar will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight; normal hours are12 p.m to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and until midnight on Sundays. And on New Year’s Eve, there will be live music, party favors, desserts and aChampagne toast at midnight for $40.
