Toasting the old dives

A day after giant yellow lettering reading “Whiskey Priest” popped up on the former Seaport Bar and Grille on South Boston’s Waterfront, business-casual clad young pros paused to ponder the forthcoming Northern Avenue bar.

“I’ll miss it for nostalgia, what did we call it, the Sleazport?” Mark Eusebio asked Karen Tkacs.

“So fitting,” she said. “Way back in the day you couldn’t get near the deck in the summertime.”

What many called the waterfront’s last dive bar closed in January, making way for an upscale Irish gastro pub with 100 different whiskies

“You could get a bucket of PBR for five bucks, you can’t go wrong with that,” said Danielle Pillion, the Friends of Fort Point Channel’s executive director. “They definitely were pioneers down in this area.”

Even Whiskey Priest manager Gabe Butcher saluted the Seaport.

“Everything in this area that survived this long is legendary,” he said. “But it’s a place like Christie’s in Newport [R.I.] — when it’s gone it’s gone.”
