Tom Brady wants fans to get blitzed; groups urge responsibility

As the Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady is usually the one getting blitzed.

But for Sunday’s home opener, Brady said he wants to see the fans at Gillette Stadium to “get nice and rowdy.”

“Yeah, start drinking early,” Brady said yesterday when asked for a message for fans. “4:15 game. Lot of time to get lubed up, come out here and cheer for their home team.”

A Patriots spokesman quickly clarified the comments and told reporters that Brady meant for fans to “stay hydrated” and be loud and responsible.

However, Brady’s remarks spread rapidly yesterday and had already made their way on to various media websites.

Attending football games traditionally means hours of drinking for many fans, some of whom drink to excess and end up being arrested.

Foxborough Police Chief Ed O’Leary would not comment on Brady’s remarks because he hadn’t heard them, but said he hopes people are responsible when drinking Sunday.

David DeIuliis, a spokesman for Mothers Against Drunk Driving Massachusetts, said the comments were not concerning and believed that most people realize Brady is a reasonable person.

“We would hope fans going to the stadium would make responsible decisions with how much alcohol they will consume and make plans to get home,” he said.
