Junior center Olivier Sarr scored a career-high 25 points before fouling out, and Brandon Childress made a series of key late-game plays as host Wake Forest upset No. 7 Duke 113-101 in double overtime Tuesday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Chaundee Brown added 24 points as the Demon Deacons (12-15, 5-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) knocked off a ranked team for the second time this season. It was the second time in seven nights that Duke lost a road game to an in-state opponent. North Carolina State handed the Blue Devils an 88-66 defeat on Feb. 19 in Raleigh.
Childress, who didn’t make a field goal until late in regulation, finished with 17 points, and teammates Isaiah Mucius and Jahcobi Neath had 16 points apiece.
Wendell Moore Jr. scored 25 points and Tre Jones finished with 24 points for Duke (23-5, 13-4), which failed to regain a share of first place in the league with Florida State.
No. 2 Baylor 85, Kansas State 66
Matthew Mayer put up 19 points, and four teammates also scored in double figures as the Bears built a massive lead in the first half and cruised past Kansas State in a Big 12 Conference matchup at Waco, Texas.
The Bears (25-2, 14-1 Big 12) experienced no hangover from their first loss in more than three months, against No. 1 Kansas on Saturday. Jared Butler scored 16 points for the Bears while Davion Mitchell hit for 14 and dished out 10 assists. MaCio Teague added 13 points, and Freddie Gillespie tallied 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Cartier Diarra paced Kansas State (9-19, 2-13) with 19 points while DaJaun Gordon and Mike McGuirl added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Wildcats have lost eight consecutive games.
No. 4 Dayton 62, George Mason 55
Obi Toppin scored a team-high 19 points and added seven rebounds, and Jalen Crutcher poured in 13 points to extend the Flyers’ winning streak to 17 games with a hard-fought win over the Patriots in Fairfax, Va.
The Flyers were the highest-ranked opponent to play in EagleBank Arena, and the Patriots (15-13, 4-11 Atlantic 10) made them battle for every point.
Dayton (26-2, 15-0) shot 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field, but only 3-for-16 on 3-point tries and 9-for-18 from the free-throw line. The Flyers never led by more than eight points. The Patriots also struggled shooting the ball, finishing 3-for-19 on 3-point attempts and 8-for-13 on free throws. They shot only 38.6 percent (22-for-57) from the floor.
No. 5 San Diego State 66, Colorado State 60
Malachi Flynn scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, powering a rally by the Aztecs, who were playing their home finale, to a win over the Rams.
San Diego State (27-1, 16-1 Mountain West Conference) was coming off its first loss of the season, sustained Saturday against visiting UNLV. Matt Mitchell added 15 points for the Aztecs, and Jordan Schakel chipped in 11.
Nico Carvacho led Colorado State (19-11, 10-7) with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Isaiah Stevens added 12 points.
No. 8 Kentucky 69, Texas A&M 60
Sophomore Immanuel Quickley scored a career-high 30 points while leading the Wildcats past the Aggies in College Station, Texas.
It was the second consecutive game in which Quickley has posted a career high in points. He had 26 against Florida on Saturday. Against Texas A&M, Quickley made 11 of 19 shots from the floor, including 8 of 12 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats (23-5, 13-2 Southeastern Conference) got 13 points from Tyrese Maxey, and EJ Montgomery added eight points, a game-high 10 rebounds, two steals and one block. The Aggies (14-13, 8-7) had their three-game winning streak snapped despite 18 points from Wendell Mitchell and 17 from Savion Flagg.
No. 15 Auburn 67, Mississippi 58
Senior Austin Wiley posted the 14th double-double of his career and 12th of the season to lead the Tigers over the Rebels in Auburn, Ala.
Wiley scored a team-high 15 points — 11 in the second half — grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked two shots as Auburn (24-4, 11-4 Southeastern Conference) stretched its home winning streak to 19 games.
Breein Tyree struggled from the field (3 of 19) but tied KJ Buffen for high-scoring honors for the game with 16 points for Ole Miss (13-15, 4-11).
Oklahoma 65, No. 22 Texas Tech 51
The Sooners’ top three scorers accounted for 45 points, and Oklahoma held one of the top offensive teams in the Big 12 in check in an upset of the Red Raiders at Oklahoma City.
Kristian Doolittle had 19 points, Brady Manek added 15 and Austin Reaves had 11 (all in the first half) on a combined 20-of-40 shooting. The Sooners (17-11, 7-8) are 9-3 in games when all three score in double figures.
Texas Tech (18-10, 9-6) came in averaging 71.6 points and 47.5 percent shooting in Big 12 play, both tops in the conference, but shot only 33.3 percent in posting a season-low point total.
No. 24 Michigan State 78, No. 18 Iowa 70
The Spartans silenced Iowa center Luka Garza down the stretch to extend their series mastery of the Hawkeyes and pick up a much-needed win over a ranked conference foe.
Freshman guard Rocket Watts tied his career high with 21 points, and senior guard Cassius Winston had 19 of his 20 points after the break for the Spartans (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten). Garza, a 6-foot-11 junior, scored 20 points. He reached that figure for the 13th straight game, tying him for the longest streak by an Iowa player since 1971, but he was held scoreless over the final seven minutes.
The night began with a five-way tie for second place in the Big Ten, but the Spartans nosed their way atop that scrum with a Saturday night showdown looming at league-leading and ninth-ranked Maryland. Iowa fell to 19-9 overall, 10-7 in the conference.
