Top chefs serve up free feast in park

Local chefs celebrated International Chefs Day yesterday by treating low-income people to a meal at a Vancouver park.

Fifty top-name chefs and their apprentices and helpers cooked for a line of hungry people stretching halfway around Oppenheimer Park in the Downtown Eastside.

Vikram Vij, head chef at Vij’s, said he took part because he wanted to serve people who might never have a chance to visit a restaurant.

“I think it’s great for us to get together and feed the people and just thank God … There is actually no reason why I would not be on the other side (of the food line),” Vij said.

With a smile and a second serving of perogies, which he claimed were “the best,” Bob Berglind, a DTES resident, said he was enjoying the experience.

“I think it’s great they will come down here. It’s all great food, and they really do help us out,” Berglind said.

He predicted the food line would last as long as there were perogies, beat roots and sausage left.
