Top mayor still lacking

Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have been voted the best mayor in 30 years, beating out Rudy Giuliani, but he gets low marks for the state of the subways since he’s been in office.

A lot of New Yorkers, 46 percent, think subways and buses have deteriorated since he was elected eight years ago, a Marist poll released yesterday found.

“It’s no surprise voters are unhappy with Mayor Bloomberg about the subways,” said Gene Russianoff, of the Straphangers Campaign. “Hundreds of thousands of students are threatened with the possible loss of their free or half-fare MetroCards.”

Service cuts also loom in June and there were fare hikes in 2008 and 2009.
