OTTAWA – The Conservative government has launched a publicity blitz touting its commitment to Canada’s Arctic.
Federal cabinet ministers Chuck Strahl, Lawrence Cannon and Gary Goodyear released a compendium of federal commitments to the North.
An accompanying website – www.northernstrategy.gc.ca – will also provide updates on the progress of those commitments.
Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Strahl says the document and website reinforce the government’s interest in the Arctic.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Cannon says the government’s goal is for economic spin offs from the North’s treasure trove of natural resources to benefit northerners first.
The federal government has promised new northern warships and military infrastructure and has begun establishing its own dedicated Arctic unit based in Yellowknife, N.W.T.
