TORONTO, Ont. – Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across southern Ontario.
Rob Kuhn, a severe weather meteorologist with the Ontario Storm Prediction Centre, says strong thunderstorms have crossed a swath of regions in the province from Grand Bend and across London into Kitchener, Orangeville and Barrie.
Additional rounds of thunderstorms are possible throughout the day.
The storms have spawned watches and some warnings, including a severe thunderstorm warning for Toronto this morning from Environment Canada, but Kuhn says no wind damage has been reported-yet.
Rainfall in Toronto was expected to be at 50 millimetres or higher.
Torrential downpours were accompanied by winds moving at 100 kilometres per hour, and Kuhn says pea-sized hail battered the city, along with a lot of lightning flashes.
Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, though Kuhn says the chances are low despite some rotation in the air over Toronto.
