Town hall planned for Brooklyn Monday night

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and civil rights attorney Norman Siegel are hosting a town hall meeting Monday evening aimed at strengthening police and community relations.

The talk, which starts at 6 p.m. Monday at the New Lots Library, 665 New Lots Ave. in East New York, was planned in response to the shooting death ofWalter Scott in North Charleston, S.C. last week.

Dash camera and amateur video show Scott running from Police Officer Michael Slager, who had pulled him over for a traffic stop. Video then showed Slager shooting Scott. The officer has since been fired and arrested on murder charges. The incident has re-ignited a national dialogue between police and communities of color.

Adams and Siegel teamed up last month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Selma marches by leading a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Earlier this year, the borough president and attorney arranged a series of online talks between high school students in Brooklyn. The inspiration, Adams said in January, was learning a student in East New York had never spoken to a white student at school, coupled with the protests following the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.
