Track vets meet to make 2012 grade

About 120 athletes and 18 Olympians will be in Edmonton this weekend competing for qualification for the Commonwealth Games and London 2012.

The inaugural Edmonton International Track Classic takes place at Foote Field on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ve been trying to position an international meet for the last number of years,” said event chair Peter Ogilvie. “This will be one of the highest level of competition, if not the highest level of competition, just under our national championship so it’s a very big meet.”

Many of Canada’s top track stars will compete in pole vault, hurdles, sprints, shot put, and a five-kilometre run. Ogilvie said the meet will feature a who’s who of the international track community and the meet itself will continue to grow.

“This is a yearly fixture now on the Canadian sport calendar and more importantly on the Edmonton sport calendar,” he said.
