Trade centre: To fund, or not to fund?

While the proposal for a new trade and convention centre is now in the public domain, the decision on funding the project is still being discussed in private.

Infrastructure Minister Bill Estabrooks made good on his pledge to release Rank Inc.’s proposal for the downtown facility to the public yesterday.

If approved by the province, the project would cost taxpayers about $327 million over 25 years.

But Estabrooks said no decision on whether or not to fund the 1.2-million-square-foot facility has been made.

“We will be continuing to look at and answer some of the questions that have been asked around (the cabinet) table,” said Estabrooks, who has been reviewing the proposal with his staff since July.

“There’s other members of our cabinet who don’t have that necessary grasp, they want some more time, and of course they’re going to receive it.”

While the decision remains to be made, the province has set Jan. 14 as a tentative contract-signing date.
