Trail of blood leads police to victim, one man in area now in police custody

A trail of blood led Toronto police to a suspect who was arrested close to the spot where a 46-year-old man was found dead early yesterday.

The victim was found near the westbound streetcar tracks on Dundas Street West in a pool of blood, without a pulse, near Brock Avenue, just west of Dufferin Street, around 2:30 a.m. yesterday, said Homicide Det. Stacy Gallant.

EMS said he suffered a “penetrating wound” to the chest. Police are saying only that he suffered “trauma to the body.”

Emergency responders performed CPR on the victim before he was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gallant could not confirm reports the man had been stabbed, saying police were waiting on the results of an autopsy scheduled for today to reveal the cause of the victim’s death.

Police arrested a 34-year-old found in the area. He is in police custody, but has not been formally charged.

The victim and suspect knew one another, Gallant said, but the motive and preceding events are not yet clear.
