Transparent levies a must: UDI

Council is moving forward with changes to levies that would require developers to foot the bill for water and sewer lines, among other infrastructure for new developments.

Taxpayers have long paid for funding of infrastructure in new areas, but council’s decision yesterday could mean the burden is passed on to individual buyers.

“If the new homebuyer is going to be asked to pay so much more per doorstep, the city should be, in a very transparent way, showing what all of the costs are associated with that house,” said executive director of the Urban Development Institute Michael Flynn.

He said the changes won’t come in to affect until at least January 2011.
