Traveling tropical dance party to swerve from Somerville to Jamaica Plain

A traveling tropical dance party will zig-zag through the streets of Boston by bike on Saturday, picking up participants along the way.

Nomadic Picó Picante is set to depart Somerville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, stopping at various “dancing stops” until arriving in Jamaica Plain in the evening.

“The project aims to encourage the intersection of cultures and to use music as a catalyst to explore the city’s diversity,” an organizer wrote on the event’s Facebook page.

A map of the route will be posted on that page Friday, offering details on where the traveling dance party will hit.

On The Awesome Foundation’s website, the dance party’s organizers quote Wayne Marshall, a local ethnomusicologist, on what the event is about:”We become familiar with our neighbors when we have some regard for them, when we listen and play collectively.”

Marshall goes on to say, “We can actively resist discourses of the exotic and touristic, and propose other modes of interaction with the strangers / neighbors among us: from collaboration, to taking a focused and sustained rather than “eclectic” or trendy approach, preferring ‘getting under each other’s skin rather than simply ‘used to each other.'”
