State police are using a close call caught on video to warn drivers about the dangers of speeding through work zones after a trooper was almost struck.
Trooper Jay Clement was sitting in his parked cruiser about 4 a.m. on Oct. 7 when a speeding car almost slammed into him while traveling in the Tip O’Neill Tunnel.
State police said that the two left lanes inside the tunnel were closed and were blocked off by cones, signage and police cruisers with their lights flashing.
Clement was in the far left lane of the tunnel when he noticed the small black car speeding toward him. At the last moment, the car swerved out of the way, missing Clement’s car by inches. The video shows Clement then driving off after the speeding car.
State police said the driver was not impaired, but that the incident still serves as a warning.
“This video shows why it is so important to slow down in construction zones, and pay attention to the road construction signs,” state police said in a statement. “This incident was only inches from being something far worse.”
