Trump’s ‘Cinco de Mayo’ tweet doesn’t go over well

Donald…just, no.

It’s hard to tell if Donald Trump was serious or just masterfully trolling us all when he shared this baffling tweet Thursday — presumably, under the guise of courting Hispanic voters, with whom he has record-low favorability ratings. But, as usual, his penchant for saying outrageous things dominated social media Thursday afternoon.

So, there’s a few things to unpack here:

1. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday, whereas “Hispanics” encompass all kinds of Central and South American cultures. The tweet is as tone deaf as wishing a Canadian a happy Fourth of July.

2. As far as Mexican cuisine goes, a taco bowl is about as authentic as a politician forcing a grin and saying “I love Hispanics!” He may as well have celebrated the holiday with one of Taco Bell’s waffle breakfast tacos.

3. According to one reviewer, the taco bowl at Trump’s restaurant actually sucks: “I also ordered “beef tacos” ($13.50) which turned out to be a fried tortilla bowl heaped with romaine lettuce, grated yellow cheese, and plain ground beef that was so devoid of flavor, it rendered an insult to Mexicans every bit as profound as Trump’s previous pronouncements [emphasis mine]. Trump food is bland food.”

Leaving that aside, the wave of photoshops and other commentary spawned by the tweet almost made up for its clumsy cultural insensitivity. Enjoy, fam:

Of course, Trump isn’t the only major candidate criticized for bungling attempts to court Hispanic voters this election cycle — Hillary Clinton got some flack after her campaign posted an article on their website entitled “7 things Hillary Clinton has in common with your abuela.”
