A case of tuberculosis has been identified atTiny World Child Care in Brookline, public health officials said Tuesday.

It was unclear whether the infected person was a staff member, parent or child.

The state Department of Public Health alerted the community about the case and said testing is available to those who may have come in contact with the disease.

“DPH is monitoring the situation, and working closely with local officials and the Tiny World Child Care community,” the department said in a statement. “Tuberculosis is preventable and treatable, and transmission of TB in these cases is very uncommon.”

TB is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, according to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine and brain. Not everyone infected with TB bacteria becomes sick, the CDC said.
According to its website, the day care accepts children between the ages of 8 weeks to 5 years old.
