Marjon Van Grunsven’s task for more than a year has been to help transform the latest Cirque du Soleil production out of its cocoon and into a butterfly.
“My job is to take care of the show, making sure that it matures,” says Van Grunsven, who is the artistic director. The show, titled “Ovo,” tells the story of insects who come across a mysterious egg.
Van Grunsven says it takes a big and diverse group to hatch this “Ovo.” The 54 acrobats, power track artists, trapeze artists and dancers are from 16 different countries.
“They’re all very different,” Van Grunsven says of the cast members. “Since they’re selected specifically for the show, they can really only do their own discipline.”
There’s something else unique about the latest show in the du Soleil family. Directed by Brazilian-born Deborah Colker, the shows have previously been a man’s game.
“It is the first-ever Cirque show to be directed by a woman,” Van Grunsven says, “which has been quite special.”
