Trusting a complete stranger with the main focal point of your face can be pretty scary, especially now since brows are having a moment. Some are hesitant to go to an eyebrow waxer in fear that your shape will be ruined in all of 10 seconds. Others swear by it, saying tweezing just doesn’t give you the same look. We took this great debate to two experts, Boom Boom Brow Bar owner Malynda Vigliotti and Ramy Gafni, who has tweezed the brows of celebrities such as Naomi Campbell and Claire Danes to perfection. He also teamed up with Look Boutiques at Duane Reade and Walgreen stores on June 13 to host Eyebrow Intervention Day in NYC.

Metro: What method do you prefer and why?

Ramy Gafni: I’m in favor of tweezing. You can literally take out one hair at a time, so it’s very succinct. With waxing, you can ruin the entire line of the brow or take out a chunk of the brow unintentionally. I also don’t like the idea of putting hot wax on the eye area because the skin is very sensitive there. Tweezing is the safest option and gives the most precision.

Malynda Vigliotti:I’m an advocate for waxing. Back in the day, people used crappy wax that was kept at too high temperatures so waxing got a bad reputation. But that’s not the case anymore. The reason why I love waxing is because you get all the baby fine hairs out and that is really helpful in creating a beautiful, thin line. I will say that if you are using anti-acne medication, you should tweeze instead of wax because the skin is more sensitive.

Metro: How much upkeep does your method require?

Ramy Gafni: For most people, once a month is ideal and you don’t have to do touch-ups between appointments. Of course there are some people who can go longer than that and some who can come in more often, but one month is usually best for most people.

Malynda Vigliotti:Once a month is ideal for waxing, [too]. My eyebrows are really full and I only wax them once a month. And I tell clients to do nothing between appointments.

Metro: How can someone create the right brow shape for their face?

Ramy Gafni:You want to follow your bone structure, so where the brow bone sticks out the most, that’s where the arch should peak. I tell people to only tweeze obvious strays like in the middle of your eyebrows or way outside the brow line. Plucking is like eating potato chips, you can’t stop at just one!

Malynda Vigliotti:The first step is to identify where the brows should start, where the arch should go and where the brow should end. Then you adapt accordingly. If someone has a round face, they should have more of an arched brow. You have to work with what you have.

Ramy Gafni:The Perfect Brow Wand is a highlighter that works for every skin tone and hair color. The Ramy Tweezers by Tweezerman has a rounded tip, so it doesn’t hurt the delicate skin around the eye area while tweezing.

Malynda Vigliotti: I recommend Brow Job, for people who have over tweezed their brows. It helps grow them in.
