Twenty six medals — and 204 goats?

Around 200 Kenyans are celebrating Canada’s 14 gold medals thanks to a Lower Mainland charity that asked people to donate a goat every time a Canadian stood on top of the podium.

As of yesterday, 204 goats have been bought through the Goat For Gold website, which was launched in January by Joel Nagtegaal, a student at the University of the Fraser Valley.

The charity is a spinoff of Goat Canucks Goat, which Nagtegaal started last year to buy a goat for each playoff game the Canucks won.

Nagtegaal said it’s a little disappointing to only have 204 goats, given that 1,073 were donated after the playoffs last year.

“But it kind of went the same way (in the spring),” Nagtegaal said. “Lots of people heard about (the charity and donated) after the Canucks were eliminated. Hopefully it keeps going.”

Nagtegaal said he hopes our newfound sense of patriotism, community and goodwill will yield more donations this week.

“(I hope) people will see how much fun the Olympics were and think that this is a fun way to keep it going,” he said.
