Two brawls, three guns and nine arrests on Sunday morning

Boston Police Officers arrested nine people and recovered three guns following two separate street brawls as a nightclub was closing around 2 a.m. Sunday.

A wild fight broke out in front of Bijou and in the streets. Traffic came to a halt on Tremont Street as a large group of men slugged it out on the sidewalk and in the street.

Officers regained control of the situation, arrested six people and dispersed the crowd the growing crowd of spectators. One officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The chaos began when officers on patrol saw a large group of known gang members in front of the Bijou Nightclub at 51 Stuart Street.

The officers noticed two suspects standing on the other side of the street signaling to the crowd while trying to remain subtle and unseen. The two men clung the their waistbands, according to the report.

Officers approached the suspects and a foot chase turned into a physical struggle. Officers subdued one of the tackled a juvenile from Dorchester and recovered a loaded Kel Tec .380 handgun.

The other suspect, later identified as Randall Mastin, 19, of Dorchester tried to run and a Taurus 9mm fell out of his pants. According to the report, it took officers five minutes to detain Mastin. Three officers sustained minor injuries in the course of the fight.

Mastin was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer causing injury and disturbing the peace.

Officers later checked out the information on the Taurus and found that it was stolen from the Union City Police in New Jersey. Mastin was subsequently charged with receiving stolen property.

The juvenile male was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.

Officers from all over the city arrived for crowd control as a large crowd formed during the arrests at about 2:25 a.m.. At this point, the large-scale street brawl broke out amongst members of the crowd, resulting in the six aforementioned arrests.

The suspects were later identified as Louis Moran, 25, of Boston. Massan Taft, 20, of Mattapan. Melvin Jones, 32, of Roxbury. Tyree Draughn, 23, of Roxbury. Lance Gerald, 27, of Malden. Anthony Haskins, 33, of Boston.

These men were charged with affray and disturbing the peace.

But the action on Sunday morning wasn’t over yet.

The crowd thinned out around 2:45 a.m., and officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force saw a few known gang members running away from the scene. Officers were told that one of the men running away might be armed with a gun.

Officers approached Mario Barros, 26, of Dorchester, and attempted to frisk him. An officer felt a gun and a struggle broke out but officers quickly put the suspect down. They then found a .22 Smith & Wesson handgun in Barros’ waistband.

He was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and a third instance of armed career criminal. He will also appear in Boston Municipal Court.

In total, nine people were arrested, three guns were recovered, and four officers sustained injuries all within approximately a 45-minute span.

All arrested parties will appear in Boston Municipal court.
