The victims of a fatal hit-and-run near Granville Island were a 31-year-old Vancouver doctor and his 25-year-old fiancée.
Aneez Mohamed, a cardiology resident at St. Paul’s and Vancouver General hospitals, and Chanelle Morgan were killed while crossing 4th Avenue on Saturday night.
Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness said their families have asked they be allowed space to grieve privately.
“It’s an unspeakable tragedy,” McGuinness said. “Two young lives (lost), and they weren’t doing anything wrong. They were just walking home.”
Morgan, who was originally from London, Ont., and studied women’s and gender studies at the University of British Columbia, was a painter and described herself as a foodie who loved art, feminism and photography on her Facebook page.
An 18-year-old man is facing charges of dangerous and impaired driving causing death in the accident.
Metro Vancouver has learned the teenager is Kurtis Rock, who will also be charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident after the two pedestrians were hit on Saturday night.
Police allege the suspect fled on foot and was eventually caught by a police dog while trying to jump into False Creek.
“It’s really shaken the community and it’s even shaken some seasoned officers,” McGuinness said yesterday.
“This young man will live with this for the rest of his life. He made very poor choices that night.”
