Two men escape burning car after Highway 417 crash

Two young Ottawa men narrowly escaped a burning vehicle after their car struck a median on Highway 417 near the Vanier Parkway on Monday.

Ottawa paramedics said at 1:54 a.m., they received a 911 call regarding a single-vehicle collision at the westbound onramp of Highway 417.

Paramedics said a light-coloured four-door Oldsmobile Alero lost control in the curve and struck the left side curb and kept on going straight towards the highway. The vehicle hit the median and caught fire.

The two occupants were able to remove themselves from the vehicle before the car became fully engulfed, paramedics said.

Paramedics treated the 20-year-old male driver for a large forehead laceration and immobilized him with a spine board. He was taken to hospital.

The front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old male, was uninjured.

Paramedics were unable to determine if the air bags deployed as the fire destroyed all the front dash.

The highway was closed in the westbound direction for about half an hour. Ontario Provincial Police are now investigating the incident.
