Two men stabbed at Tufts frat

Two men were stabbed at a Tufts University fraternity house early Sunday morning, prompting a brief shelter-in-place order as police searched for a suspect or multiple suspects.

The victims were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for stab wounds to the neck. A 20-year-old man is in serious condition and a 19-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The stabbings took place at the Delta Tau Delta house at 98 Professors Row. The attack was reported at 3:52 a.m. School officials took to social media and email, asking students to seek shelter, lock their doors and stay away from windows at about 5 a.m.. The messages said police were investigating a “serious crime.” The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 8 a.m., but at that time, the Somerville police had no suspects in custody. Investigators were interviewing witnesses Sunday morning.

At the time of publication on Sunday evening, Somerville Police announced that they had identified a person of interest into custody and he is a Tufts student.

Tufts’ commencement was held on May 17, but the summer sessions are underway. Somerville police said that the victims were not affiliated with the University. According to Somerville Police, this stabbing was not random and the victims knew their attackers.

Police will step up their presence in the area in light of these acts of violence. Somerville Deputy Chief Paul Trant said that there is no threat to community at large.
