Uber offering free taxi rides this week

Uber wants you to come on and take a free ride.

The GPS-based on-demand livery company, in an effort to promote its new Uber TAXI service, is offering free rides in Boston from 5 a.m. Tuesday until 8 p.m. Thursday, according to the company.

The discount, which is up to $25, does not apply to the company’s traditional black or SUV service.

The company warns that because it only works with licensed Boston taxi drivers, availability may be limited during peak periods.

Uber TAXI launched last month after the controversy surrounding the company’s livery practices erupted.

Cambridge officials have challenged that there are no regulations that govern the company’s new technology. Officials there set up a sting that resulted in a cease-and-desist order. However, that order was eventually overturned after an outcry from the public and state officials. State officials then worked with the company on a solution.
