Uchegbu scores 18 as Huskies win Shoveller tournament

The Saint Mary’s Huskies won the Rod Shoveller university basketball tournament at Dalplex yesterday.

Four players hit double figures, led by 18 points and nine rebounds from Ikeobi Uchegbu, as the Huskies beat the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 71-66 at the 19th annual exhibition event.

Mark McLaughlin added 16 points, Joey Haywood had 12 and Miguel Pink 11 for the Huskies, who were 4-2 in the first half of the Atlantic University Sport season.

The X-Men, who have a 5-0 record this season, had a 52-51 edge at halftime, but the Huskies scored the first hoop of the second half and held the lead the rest of the way. Christian Upshaw, a guard from Halifax, had a game-high 21 points and added eight rebounds for X.

In other action, fourth-year guard Simon Farine had a game-high 22 points as the host Dalhousie Tigers lost 72-52 to the Ottawa Gee Gees in the third-place game.

The AUS regular season resumes Friday.
