UHO told to put a lid on jugs

A Manhattan judge yesterday ordered the United Homeless Organization to stop soliciting for donations.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo sued the UHO last month calling its ubiquitous water jug collections a fraudulent operation that enriches founder Stephen Riley and its director Myra Walker.

The judge gave the UHO until tomorrow to get its dozens of change collectors off the street or risk contempt of court.

The UHO is expected to appeal the injunction. Cuomo accused Riley and Walker of spending hundreds of thousands on personal expenses from video games to Weight Watchers.

Their collectors pay a $15 to $25 fee for use of a table and jug for four hours, keeping any money they collect.
