Mayoral candidate Bill Thompson earned another key endorsement yesterday, with the Uniformed Firefighters Association announcing that it will back him in this year’s race.

“New Yorkers need a leader that understands that public safety is the bedrock of a growing economy and vibrant, thriving city,” said Steve Cassidy, the union’s president, in a statement. “Bill Thompson is the best candidate for New York City’s future.”

The endorsement is significant for Thompson who has been trailing behind City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former Congressman Anthony Weiner in recent polls.

Thompson also earned the endorsement of the United Federation of Teachers last month, which helped him jump forward in a recent Quinnipiac University poll. According to the survey, Quinn had 19 percent of voter support, Weiner had 17 percent and Thompson had 16 percent.

The firefighters’ union endorsed Anthony Weiner when he ran in 2005. Cassidy said on Tuesday that “2005 was a long, long, long, long time ago,” New York Daily News reports.

Cassidy went on to say Weiner was a quitter for ultimately conceding in the race against Fernando Ferrer.

“New York City firefighters don’t quit. We don’t believe in quitters,” he said.
