University tells bike co-op to hit the road

It may be the end of one path for a University of Calgary bike co-operative, but the group hopes to find a new home on campus for the bike library and repair shop.

Bike Root was issued a notice to vacate by July 30 out of their current home since mid-2008, located in the Murray Fraser loading dock.

U of C spokesperson James Stevenson said the home was temporary and the school needs to reoccupy the area.

“Unfortunately, the space at the facility is tight and we don’t have anywhere else for them to go,” he said.

Bike Root member Patricia Minor understands the decision, but wishes the school was more proactive. She adds that the school has been helpful, however.

“They have been really supportive and we’re looking at a couple different options. We really hope to stay on campus,” Minor said, adding the Students’ Union has also been supportive.

Member Raza Omrani was disappointed to hear the news.

“I use the bike every day. This is really inconvenient, and I think the school should do more.”
