Upcoming podcast will tell a west end story

Everyone has a clear idea of Halifax’s south end, north end and downtown, but things get vague when thoughts turn to the west end. A new social media project aims to change that.

Starting this fall, Coun. Jennifer Watts will work with HRM Cultural Affairs, local artists and residents to build an online project that will allow people to learn more about the area, past and present.

She hopes it will become a podcast that walkers can listen to as they visit the sites.

“We were looking at a project at how to listen to some of those stories and have an active-living component,” she explains. “It would be really good to interview local people so their stories can be passed on.”

It will tell stories such as when the St. Agnes School burned down in 1974 and was rebuilt, or modern developments like how the Chebucto Road widening affected residents.

The west end is one of the most religiously diverse areas in the city.

It’s home to a range of Christian churches, a Hindu temple, a Jewish synagogue and an under-construction Muslim mosque. Watts also hopes those groups share their stories with the project.
