Upper East Side doorman dies after fall through glass while shoveling snow

An Upper East Side doorman who was shoveling snow in front of his building Thursday morning died after he slipped and fell through a window, the NYPD said.

Miguel Gonzales, 59, was clearing away snow in front of 333 E. 93rd St., which has an entrance a few steps below sidewalk level, when he slipped and fell through the window next to the entrance area.

“The glass cut him on his neck and head. The cuts were very deep,” a police official said.

A 911 call was made at 9:30 a.m., and responders found Gonzales, who commutes from Bridgeport, Connecticut, with deep cuts to his neck and head from the broken glass. He was taken to Metropolitan Hospital where he died shortly after from his severe cuts, police said.

In a news conference about the storm late this morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio acknowledged Gonzales’ death.

“It’s a reminder to be very careful when you’re shoveling,” de Blasio said. “If you’re not up to shoveling, don’t shovel. Take breaks, all of those common sense rules. We don’t know what happened in this casem, just want to remind people to take it seriously.”
